Rare species in the Andaman Sea


Rays: Giant manta rays are also denoted as Mobula Birostris which consists of the world's biggest ray tag. Manta rays are found in tropical and subtropical waters above 20 c temperature across the globe. The manta rays are in sufficient quantity across the Andaman Islands. 

  


Mobulas birostris are giant rays and their shaped bodies can grow up to 7 meters in diameter, while reef mantas are 5.5 meters in diameter. According to the study, Manta rays are very intelligent among the cold-blooded fishes based on their brain size. The extended lifetime of manta rays is approximately 50 years.


Scorpionfish: Scorpionfishes are also known as rockfish or stonefish because of their tendency to live around coral reefs. The Scorpionfish is generally found in the bottom waters of the ocean. The body structure of Scorpionfish consists of large and spiny heads, fin spines, and rocky upper body layers.


 

Scorpionfishes are considered ambush predators which hunt at night and spend the daylight hours resting in rocky caves. Their diet includes small fish, crustaceans, and snails that live around coral reefs. Most Scorpionfish species have a lifespan of around 15 years and found less than 2 feet in size. 


Tiger Tail Seahorse: Tiger Tail Seahorse also belongs to the Syngnathidae family along with other types of seahorses such as pipefish, and seadragons. The seahorse has a lifespan of 1-5 years and found up to 18.6 cm in size. They can be seen in different colors but commonly found in yellow or black.  



The Tiger tail seahorses can be witnessed in the waters of Andaman, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines, western central pacific, and Singapore. Adult seahorses prefer to live in pairs. Male seahorse accepts eggs from a single female in his brood pouch for fertilization. 


Turtle: The experience to witness an adult turtle into the clear crystal water of Andaman boosts your adventure level underwater. You will get an opportunity to see four types of turtles in Andaman -Leatherback, Hawksbill, Green turtle, and Olive ridley. 



Karmatang beach has the largest turtle nesting in Andaman. You will witness a variety of sea turtles at the remote locations of Andaman. 


Dugong: Dugong is the rarest sea cow in the world and the state animal of Andaman. The dugong is also known as Sea cow and belongs to the Dugongidae family. Sea cow is a preserved marine species because of its rapidly declining rate due to poaching. It has a total lifespan of 70 years. 

 


You can have a glimpse of Dugong in the little Andaman island, Neil Island, Havelock Island, Rutland Islands, and the central group of Nicobar Islands.
